Bright work is a nautical reference to the parts of a ship that need to be kept shined and maintained. The demanding labor of brightwork maintenance has been a storied part of maritime life for some 250 years, since before the days of William Mountaine and The Seaman's Vade-Mecum (first published 1744).
The idea is that Bright work, though labor intensive, is a large amount of effort that increases the value and longevity of a ship.
